Accessing the special folders Android/data and Android/obb

Google has recently restricted access to the folders Android/data and Android/obb to the following two methods:

  • The built-in "Files" app
  • A connected PC or Mac (via USB)

Access for other apps like Total Commander has been blocked. This was done by an update of the "Files" app via Play Store.
On Android 14, the newer, restricted version of the "Files" app is built into the operating system and cannot be uninstalled.

To move (not copy!) files to Android/data or Android/obb, you can use split screen mode with the "Files" app as follows:

  1. Click OK in the Total Commander dialog which warned you about the blocked access to launch the "Files" app
  2. Click on the 3 dots in the upper right of the "Files" app
  3. Click on "New window"
  4. Open the list of running apps, e.g. by dragging the bar at the bottom of the screen slightly upward
  5. Click on the icon above one of the two "Files" app windows
  6. Click on "Split screen"
  7. Click on the second window of the "Files" app. You should now have two "Files" app windows above each other, both in the app-specific folder
  8. In one of the two, go to the directory with the files you want to copy
  9. Long click on a file to select it. More files can be selected by single clicks
  10. Drag and drop the selected files to the other "Files" app window
